CLASS CONTENT

  • Ages: adult, child, and infant
  • Single-rescuer and multiple rescuer response
  • Identifying and managing Cardiac Arrest and Respiratory Arrest
  • Pediatric Respiratory Failure
  • Special Considerations: Maternal Cardiac Arrest, Opioid-Associated Life-Threatening Emergencies, Advanced Airway
  • Team Dynamics

CLASS STRUCTURE

  • Students watch instructional videos regarding each specific topic.
  • Engaging classroom discussion solidifies knowledge required for the final exam.
  • Students choose their own teams and practice skills using peer-to-peer real-time corrective feedback. Students learn to function as individual responders and as part of a group.
  • Manikins with feedback devices help students find the correct compression tempo and depth.
  • Real-time practice scenarios offer adequate time for students to develop confidence and skills prior to scenario tests.
  • Certifications are issued same-day, usually at the end of class. Students will claim their certification card using the email they provide at registration.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To receive certification, AHA requires students to perform skills to a standard that demonstrates proficiency. Students must demonstrate proficiency with all BLS skills. If the student is unable to demonstrate proficiency during class, as required by AHA, the student will be marked as either "incomplete" or "needs remediation" and will not be issued a card. Remediation via rescheduling for another class is available for $20.

PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Students must demonstrate consecutive high-quality compressions, high-quality ventilations with a bag-mask device, and cognitive understanding and application of BLS skills during cardiac and respiratory arrest in a single-rescuer and multi-rescuer team.

CPR requires significant physical effort. Physical performance requirements (described below) are not waived under any circumstances. Inability to perform CPR as described below (***) will result in no certification and no refund.

CPR SKILLS
  • Adult Compressions: perform 30 consecutive compressions, each compression 2" deep with full recoil, at a rate of 100-120 beats per minute. Manikins give real-time objective feedback.
  • Adult Ventilations: Provide 2 effective ventilations in under 10 seconds, then return to compressions. Students may use a bag-valve mask and/or pocket mask. Each breath should be given over 1 second and create an appropriately-sized chest rise on the manikin.
  • Infant Compressions: 15-30 consecutive compressions, each compression 1-1/2" deep with full recoil, at a rate of 100-120 beats per minute.
  • Infant Ventilations: Provide 2 effective ventilations in under 10 seconds, then return to compressions. Students may use a bag-valve mask and/or pocket mask. Each breath should be given over 1 second and create an appropriately-sized chest rise on the manikin.
  • AED for Adult and Infant: student must turn on the AED and then follow audible prompts, apply pads correctly, ensure safety of all participants via effective communication, and leave AED and pads on for the duration of the scenario.
  • ***PHYSICAL TESTING SCENARIO 1: assess and recognize cardiac arrest, perform 4 cycles of high-quality CPR and integrate correct and safe use of a trainer AED.
  • PHYSICAL TESTING SCENARIO 2: assess, recognize, and treat responsive choking for an infant (manikin).
RESCUE BREATHING SKILLS
  • Adult Rescue Breathing: 1 breath every 6 seconds
  • Child Rescue Breathing: 1 breath every 3 seconds
  • Infant Rescue Breathing: 1 breath every 2 seconds

If the child/infant has a pulse of less than 60 beats per minute, with signs of poor perfusion despite adequate oxygenation, begin CPR.

COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE REQUIRMENTS

  • Students must pay attention to all videos played during class.
  • Students are highly encouraged to be verbally engaged during class to help solidify knowledge. Many students report that verbal engagement tends to be more effective than note-taking.
  • Students must be able to integrate verbal feedback from instructor into the scenario practiced on a manikin.
  • Students must be able to identify and treat cardiac arrest and respiratory failure/respiratory arrest.
  • Students must perform the ***PHYSICAL TESTING SCENARIO (listed above) without any verbal assistance/advice from peers and instructor.
  • COGNITIVE TEST: Students must answer 21 out of 25 questions correctly on the final exam (offered verbal, written, or electronic). The class is purposefully designed to prepare the student for the final exam. All 25 questions will be prepared for verbally throughout the duration of class; the final exam should feel like a summary of what you have already learned and practiced. By the end of class, most students report feeling "very well-prepared" for the final exam. This test is open-source, and students can use any resource (including Provider Manual) to answer questions on the exam.
